  7. Woah...ok I'm gonna be applying for Spring 2012. (fingers crossed) but yeah I was wondering about their Scholarships...did you get one?

    1. Yeah I got a bit of it. :) I hear that you can actually increase your scholarship each year - I had a friend who repeatedly applied and got his scholarship increased until he was pretty much given a full ride.

    2. I hear you're supposed to apply asap, meaning don't wait for the deadline or close to it to turn it in; I turned it in a day or two before the deadline :( but they got back to me within a month and a half to two months? I don't quite remember. Although my friend told me for Illustration, she heard back within 2 weeks - but she's also really good hahaha so I guess it depends. :)

  10. Hi! First of all congratulations on getting accepted :D! This is a great looking portfolio.
I just wanted to ask... in your opinion, would you choose quantity (of rough thumbnails) over quality? or vice versa?

    1. Thank you! :) (We're starting next week!) I mean the point of rough thumbnails is to show the reviewer that you've considered multiple angles to your composition (and that you have this ability through proof of varying thumbnails). I've been told to not go too overboard though and I feel like if i did my portfolio differently now I definitely wouldn't include so many thumbnails and instead show the most diverse and different ones...That being said at the same time it's up to you, I think for Art Center you can kind of do whatever and they're not going to get angry (as opposed to the real world). The reason i left so many thumbnails in this portfolio was, honestly, just to take up space and make my pages look fuller. So if you're making a portfolio for Art Center, this is just my opinion, but do whatever you can to show how thoughtful you are (range of shots in thumbnails), the whole process (at least: thumbnail->sketch->different color themes->final), and to make your portfolio pages actually...pleasing to look at. So don't crowd your images yet don't have it sparse looking either. Sorry if I just rambled on! Hope it helps though :((

    2. Thank you for taking your time to give such a descriptive reply :o!!
Haha I do hope they don't get angry XD Just a few days ago I roughly put all the drawings together and I ended up with 65 pages!! I have no idea how I will reduce this to 30ish pages :(.. I'm aware that AC wants 25+ pieces but do you know if they have a limit?
Anyway thanks again and have a fun first day of class! :D (Who knows maybe I will be able to meet you Spring 2013 XD!)

    3. I think it looks bad if you go over too much, going over too much might show you're not decisive enough? I mean if you really think they're important and show something new that previous pages don't show then I guess that's reason enough to include them. But i've been told not to go overboard before and to be concise and to the point...and even then I had what a lot told me was a really long portfolio for art center. And yeah! Hopefully see you soon at art center!!

  11. Hi! I am also an applicant for the Spring... and seeing this portfolio is a huge, huge, huge help! Thank you for posting! Looking at this, and working on formatting my portfolio, I wondered--is this format one they recommended at ACN? It looks a lot like the student work from the Scott Robertson books that the Entertainment Design department put out a few years ago, and I was wondering if this is what the department perhaps expects in terms of presentation style... Your work is beautiful, and I hope you have an amazing semester!

    1. Oh are you talking about the Skillful Huntsman? Yeah that book was put out by the forerunners of the Entertainment Design Major and basically sums up what you do in Entertainment Design. So basically my friend told me to just copy the layout/progress of that book as best I can since it hits their guidelines to the tee. At the same time, I think a lot of portfolios are set up this way anyways, but that book is definitely a big help in making sure you're doing everything and showing everything from thumbnails ->sketches->color etc. Hope you get in!! :)

  12. Yeah! That's book exactly. Thanks for the response--I am so nervous! This week there's a little feedback session for applicants but I think seeing your work will be an even bigger help in making sure everything's together as it should be. And thank you! I think for all of us applying this program has been our dream for a long time. :)

  13. Hello, thanks for posting our portfolio, love it ! Before you got to Art Center, how did you gain knowledge of Photoshop, and environments. I want to apply for Ent Design, but I have never used Photoshop or perspective. Congrats on our acceptance, how do you like it so far ?

    1. Before Art Center I went to this amazing school called CDA (Concept Design Academy) in Pasadena and took some environment classes there as well. I'm still not that good with environments but I think CDA helped me out a lot. Understanding photoshop just comes with time and i've been using it since I was younger so that definitely helped. Don't worry about not understanding how to use it, some of my classmates have never used it and turned in a portfolio traditional material based (it never hurts to start playing around w it though). Art Center has been good so far, not quite sure if i learned anything that substantial yet since 1st term is kind of like...woodshop+working with foam..wood...and paper (and not like..Clay which i thought would've been more informative) but I think the patience and discipline required to go through it are invaluable. I'm sure the education will show its effects in no time :)

  14. Amy! Portfolio Help! -.- Random entertainment wannabee...I have a blogger question. Here it goes - I just posted some in-process work for my portfolio and for some reason can not click on it to blow it up in the slideshow window thing like yours and my other posts do. Have any clue what I did that made it go bonkers?

And thank you very much for posting your portfolio(!), I too was curious what merit money you got, if any (and if you were comfortable with sharing the amount), and if you did not get, would you know of someone who got the major scholarship and possible links to the work or ANY other work/active threads or classes are posting at..not many recent bloggers I could find actual work for this year =/ Thanks! -Zing

    1. Hey Ryan!! I just checked your blog and it looks like you figured it out! Sorry to get back to you so late. I did get a scholarship (btw I hear that you get the most amount at the beginning when you get in and each term offers you a chance to increase your scholarship but in smaller increments) but honestly I think my portfolio compared to my classmates doesn't even compare, although even if we did end up getting around the same amount, i feel they're much more talented than me Q_Q

Here's a link to my classmates (he's prob the best out of our term ((but this is also my opinion haha))) and he received 6.5k http://hungrybird2776.blogspot.com He's really really freaking good AND he's FAST. Let me know if you have any more questions! Or email me. :) Good luck!

  15. Hi Amy! Thank you for posting your entrance portfolio - it's really inspiring! I've been eyeing Art Center's Entertainment Design program for a while now and would love your advice on some things. .. I already have a BFA in illustration from another school, but I think the ED program would give me the specific skills/portfolio needed to work in the entertainment industry.

I took a look at your resume and noticed you have a prior degree in Painting. Are most Art Center undergrads professionals or are more straight out of high school? And did Art Center give you any credits for the prior BFA? I'm straddled with a lot of debt already and am looking to save at much as possible o_O Thanks for any help you can give!

    1. The trend that I've noticed recently with Art Center is that the incoming class is getting younger and younger. i remember when I was still in high school I was told the average age at Art Center was around 23-24...since then I think now the average age is probably around 20-21?. In my class there's prob an equal amount that are straight out of high school, 20-24 and 24+ so I guess it's still pretty even. Most are unprofessional...then again each term's class varies. From what I remember only 2 people including myself have a degree..

And yeah, I had to double check (Art Center missed a bunch of classes) but I got some credits transferred over. There's a cap on 30 units to transfer. Btw, it's not like you have to graduate from Art Center if money is your issue, you can try and make your own schedule based off what classes you think are important...or you can try private schools like Concept Design Academy in Pasadena (WHICH I HEAVILY RECOMMEND because I LOVE CDA http://www.conceptdesignacad.com) and it's sooooo much cheaper and offers a damn good education. :) If you have any more questions feel free to ask/email me! :)

  16. I'd love to make my own schedule at Art Center, but unfortunately I don't live in California. May I ask why you chose to attend Art Center instead of continuing with CDA? And why a second bachelor's degree instead of an MFA?

Hope you don't mind me picking your brain :)

    1. To be honest the main reason is that my parents don't see CDA as a legit school just because it doesn't offer a degree. I try and tell them that I already have a degree and now it's just learning all the technical bits and getting better. Regardless they still made me work full time (almost full time, i got a day off for class/hmwk) so the only to get them to let me concentrate on art 24/7 was to enroll at Art Center. Also I didn't want an MFA in Fine Arts because that's more geared towards gallery art...you'll realize you don't really need a degree to get into the entertainment industry - you can have a PhD but if you can't draw you can't draw...

I wrote this out really quick cause my first response got eaten by blogspot...so let me know if you have any more questions!
